113 to lose jobs as Verizon Wireless hires own tech-support team
Thirty-five of those employees are in central Ohio. The layoffs are expected to take effect by the end of August. The 47 Verizon Wireless stores in Ohio that are affected — including 10 in central Ohio — will remain open. The layoffs are the result of a decision by Verizon Wireless to bring tech-support services in-house, Verizon spokeswoman Andi Ferguson said in an email. Flextronics has performed that work for 10 years. Verizon Wireless began making the staff changes at its stores about a year ago, Ferguson said. "We are now doing the same this summer in all of our stores in the Northeast and several markets in the South and Midwest," she said. "Our goal is to simplify and improve the customer experience in our company-owned stores by staffing in-house with employees whom we hire and train." The Flextronics employees who worked at the stores include customer-service technicians, field team supervisors, territory managers and regional managers. Affected employees will have the opportunity to apply for other positions with Flextronics as well as with Verizon Wireless, officials at both companies said. Flextronics, which is headquartered in Singapore, is a Fortune Global 500 company that focuses on designing, building and servicing electronics products for clients such as Microsoft, Dell, Cisco and Hewlett-Packard. tferan@dispatch.com
